Fibroid-Surgery-Cost-in-India.webp
15/Sep/2026

Uterine fibroids are a common problem in women of reproductive age. Some women have fibroids without any symptoms, while others may experience heavy periods, pelvic pain, pressure, frequent urination, difficulty in conceiving or repeated pregnancy problems.

One of the first questions many patients ask after being diagnosed with fibroids is: “How much will fibroid surgery cost in India?”

The answer is not the same for every patient. The cost depends on the size, number and location of fibroids, type of surgery, hospital, city, investigations, anaesthesia, medicines and length of hospital stay.

This article explains the expected fibroid surgery cost in India in 2026, the different surgical options and an important point that is sometimes missed: the cheapest surgery is not always the right surgery, especially when a woman wants to preserve her fertility.

Medical note: Costs mentioned below are approximate ranges for general understanding. Actual charges can vary considerably between hospitals, cities and individual cases. A gynaecologist should decide whether surgery is required and which procedure is appropriate.

What Are Fibroids?

Fibroids, also called uterine leiomyomas, are growths that develop from the muscular tissue of the uterus. Most fibroids are benign, meaning they are not cancerous.

They can develop in different parts of the uterus. Some grow towards the inner cavity, some within the muscular wall and some towards the outer surface.

The location can be more important than the size.

For example, a relatively small fibroid projecting into the uterine cavity may cause heavy bleeding or fertility problems, while a larger fibroid on the outer surface may sometimes cause very few symptoms.

This is why treatment should not be decided only by looking at the size mentioned in an ultrasound report.

How Much Does Fibroid Surgery Cost in India in 2026?

As a general estimate, fibroid surgery in India may cost approximately:

Type of Treatment/Surgery Approximate Cost in India
Hysteroscopic Myomectomy ₹50,000  –  ₹1,50,000
Laparoscopic Myomectomy ₹1,00,000  –  ₹2,50,000
Open/Abdominal Myomectomy ₹80,000  –  ₹2,00,000
Laparoscopic Hysterectomy ₹1,00,000  –  ₹2,50,000
Abdominal Hysterectomy ₹70,000  –  ₹1,80,000
Robotic Surgery, where available ₹2,00,000  –  ₹4,50,000+

These are broad indicative ranges rather than fixed prices. A complicated case involving multiple or very large fibroids can cost more.

The important thing is to understand why one patient may receive a ₹70,000 estimate while another may receive a ₹2 lakh or higher estimate.

The surgical approach, hospital facilities and complexity of the case can make a major difference.

What Determines Fibroid Surgery Cost?

There are several factors behind the final bill.

1. Type of surgery

Hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and open surgery are different procedures. Their operation theatre requirements, instruments, anaesthesia and recovery periods can vary.

2. Number of fibroids

Removing one accessible fibroid is different from removing several fibroids from different parts of the uterus.

3. Size of the fibroids

Very large fibroids may require more surgical time and preparation.

4. Location of fibroids

A fibroid inside the uterine cavity may be suitable for hysteroscopic removal, while fibroids deep inside the uterine muscle may require another approach.

5. Hospital and city

Treatment costs can vary significantly between metropolitan cities, smaller cities and individual hospitals.

6. Investigations before surgery

Depending on the case, the doctor may recommend ultrasound, blood tests and sometimes additional imaging.

MRI is not automatically necessary for every woman with fibroids. It can be useful in selected complicated cases where more detailed mapping is required.

7. Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia charges are generally included separately or as part of the surgical package, depending on the hospital.

8. Hospital stay

A shorter stay can reduce hospital-related expenses, although the decision about discharge should always depend on the patient’s recovery.

9. Medicines and follow-up

Antibiotics, pain medicines, iron treatment, injections or other medicines may add to the total cost.

Types of Fibroid Surgery

There is no single operation called “fibroid surgery”. The procedure depends on where the fibroid is located and what the patient’s treatment goal is.

1. Hysteroscopic Myomectomy

A hysteroscope is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. There is usually no abdominal cut.

This method is mainly useful for certain fibroids that project into the uterine cavity.

It can be particularly relevant when fibroids are associated with abnormal bleeding and, in selected cases, infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss.

Approximate cost in 2026:

₹50,000 – ₹1,50,000

The actual cost depends on the hospital, complexity and whether additional procedures are needed.

2. Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Laparoscopic myomectomy is performed through small abdominal incisions.

The surgeon removes the fibroid while keeping the uterus in place.

This can be an important option for women who want to preserve their uterus and potentially plan pregnancy in the future.

Myomectomy specifically removes the fibroid rather than removing the uterus. However, new fibroids can develop later.

Approximate cost:

₹1,00,000 – ₹2,50,000

Complex cases may cost more.

3. Open or Abdominal Myomectomy

In some patients, an abdominal approach may be more appropriate, particularly when fibroids are very large, numerous or technically difficult to remove through minimally invasive surgery.

It involves a larger abdominal incision compared with laparoscopy and generally requires a longer recovery.

Approximate cost:

₹80,000 – ₹2,00,000

The cost can increase if the surgery is complicated or requires a longer hospital stay.

4. Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy means removal of the uterus.

It can be performed through different routes, including laparoscopic, vaginal or abdominal surgery, depending on the patient’s condition.

Because the uterus is removed, pregnancy is no longer possible after hysterectomy. Therefore, for a woman who wants future pregnancy, this is a fundamentally different decision from myomectomy.

Approximate cost:

₹70,000 – ₹2,50,000+

The exact amount depends on the surgical route and complexity.

Why Fertility Changes the Treatment Discussion

This is perhaps the most important point for younger women.

If a woman has fibroids and also wants to become pregnant, the conversation should not begin with “Which surgery is cheapest?”

It should begin with:

“Does this fibroid actually need treatment, and if it does, which treatment best protects my reproductive goals?”

A myomectomy leaves the uterus in place and may allow future pregnancy, although surgery itself can sometimes cause internal scarring and pregnancy after some types of myomectomy may require special planning.

On the other hand, hysterectomy permanently removes the possibility of carrying a pregnancy.

So, in fertility patients, the treatment decision should consider:

  • Age
  • Ovarian reserve
  • Previous pregnancies
  • Previous miscarriages
  • Number of fibroids
  • Size of fibroids
  • Location of fibroids
  • Distortion of the uterine cavity
  • Other fertility factors
  • Future pregnancy plans

This is why two women with apparently similar fibroids may receive different treatment advice.

Does Every Fibroid Need Surgery?

No.

Finding a fibroid on ultrasound does not automatically mean that surgery is required.

Some fibroids are small and do not cause symptoms. In such situations, observation may be reasonable.

Treatment becomes more relevant when fibroids are associated with problems such as:

  • Heavy or prolonged periods
  • Anaemia due to excessive bleeding
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Persistent pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty conceiving in selected cases
  • Repeated pregnancy loss in selected situations
  • Significant distortion of the uterine cavity
  • Rapidly changing or concerning findings requiring further evaluation

The decision should be based on the patient, symptoms and reproductive plans, rather than the ultrasound report alone.

Fibroid Size Is Not the Only Thing That Matters

A common misunderstanding is:

“My fibroid is only 2 cm, so it cannot be important.”

This is not always correct.

A small submucosal fibroid inside or close to the uterine cavity may have a greater effect on bleeding or fertility than a larger fibroid on the outer surface.

Similarly, a large fibroid does not automatically mean surgery is necessary.

In my view, location and relationship with the uterine cavity deserve as much attention as size.

This is one reason why a proper ultrasound assessment is important before discussing surgery.

What Tests Are Done Before Fibroid Surgery?

The exact investigations depend on the patient.

Commonly, the doctor may consider:

  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Complete blood count
  • Haemoglobin level
  • Blood group and other pre-operative tests
  • Kidney and liver-related tests when required
  • Pregnancy test where appropriate
  • ECG or other anaesthesia assessment depending on age and medical history
  • MRI in selected complicated cases

The purpose of these investigations is not simply to confirm that a fibroid exists. The aim is to understand the surgical problem and the patient’s overall condition.

What Is Included in the Fibroid Surgery Package?

Before accepting a quoted surgery cost, it is useful to ask what is actually included.

A hospital estimate may include:

  • Surgeon charges
  • Operation theatre charges
  • Anaesthesia
  • Room charges
  • Nursing charges
  • Basic medicines
  • Surgical consumables
  • Routine investigations
  • Post-operative observation

But not every hospital package covers everything.

Patients should specifically ask about:

“What will be the approximate total cost if there are no complications, and what items are excluded from the package?”

This simple question can prevent confusion later.

Why Two Hospitals May Give Different Fibroid Surgery Costs

Suppose one hospital quotes ₹90,000 and another quotes ₹1.6 lakh.

That does not automatically mean the second hospital is overcharging.

The quotations may differ because of:

  • Different room categories
  • Different surgeon fees
  • Different anaesthesia charges
  • Different operation theatre charges
  • Different consumables
  • Longer expected hospital stay
  • Different surgical techniques
  • Different investigations
  • Different follow-up arrangements

Therefore, comparing only the final number is not enough.

Compare what is included in the estimate.

Can Medicines Avoid Fibroid Surgery?

Sometimes medicines can help control symptoms such as heavy bleeding or pain.

However, medicines do not provide the same result as physically removing a fibroid.

Treatment can range from observation and medicines to procedures or surgery depending on symptoms, fibroid characteristics and reproductive goals. ACOG also lists myomectomy, hysterectomy and uterine artery embolisation among treatment approaches for fibroids.

Therefore, the question should not simply be:

“Can I avoid surgery?”

It should be:

“What treatment gives me the best balance between symptom control, safety and my future fertility?”

Is Uterine Artery Embolisation an Alternative?

Uterine artery embolisation, or UAE, is another treatment option for selected women.

In this procedure, the blood supply to the fibroids is reduced, causing them to shrink.

It can be used instead of myomectomy or hysterectomy in appropriate cases and is generally performed by an interventional radiologist.

However, a woman who strongly wants future pregnancy should discuss the reproductive implications carefully with her treating doctor before choosing this option.

The “best” treatment is not the same for every patient.

Fibroid Surgery and Pregnancy

One of the most common concerns among young women is:

“Can I become pregnant after fibroid surgery?”

After a myomectomy, pregnancy may be possible because the uterus remains in place. However, the possibility and timing of pregnancy depend on the individual case.

Factors include:

  • Number of fibroids removed
  • Depth of the uterine incision
  • Location of the fibroids
  • Surgical technique
  • Healing of the uterus
  • Other fertility factors

Some women may also be advised to wait for a period after surgery before attempting pregnancy.

The timing should be decided individually by the treating gynaecologist.

What Is the Recovery Time?

Recovery depends strongly on the type of surgery.

Hysteroscopic surgery

Recovery can be relatively quick in suitable cases.

Laparoscopic surgery

Many women can return to normal activities sooner than after open surgery, although recovery varies from person to person.

Open myomectomy

Recovery usually takes longer because of the larger abdominal incision.

Hysterectomy

Recovery depends on whether the surgery was laparoscopic, vaginal or abdominal. Minimally invasive approaches generally have shorter hospitalisation and recovery than abdominal surgery when they are feasible.

Patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions regarding exercise, lifting, intercourse and return to work.

How to Reduce Unnecessary Fibroid Surgery Expenses

Reducing cost does not mean choosing the cheapest hospital.

A better approach is to avoid unnecessary investigations, procedures or hospital stays.

Before surgery, ask:

  1. Do I definitely need surgery?
  2. What type of fibroid do I have?
  3. Where exactly is it located?
  4. Will this fibroid affect my fertility?
  5. Do I need a myomectomy or another treatment?
  6. Why is this particular surgical approach being recommended?
  7. What is included in the hospital package?
  8. How long am I likely to stay in the hospital?
  9. Are there any additional costs not included in the estimate?
  10. When can I safely plan pregnancy after surgery?

These questions are often more useful than simply asking for the lowest surgery price.

A Practical Example

Consider two women.

Patient A has one 2.5 cm fibroid projecting into the uterine cavity and has heavy bleeding.

Patient B has several 7 – 8 cm fibroids on the outer and muscular parts of the uterus but has no significant symptoms.

Although Patient B has much larger fibroids, the treatment decision cannot be made simply by comparing the numbers.

Patient A may potentially benefit from a hysteroscopic procedure, depending on the exact anatomy.

Patient B may need observation, medication or surgery depending on symptoms, age, reproductive plans and examination findings.

This illustrates an important point:

Fibroid treatment is not a size-based decision alone.

Fibroid Surgery Cost in Major Indian Cities

Costs also differ according to location.

Broadly, patients may see higher surgical costs in large metropolitan cities such as:

  • Delhi NCR
  • Mumbai
  • Bengaluru
  • Hyderabad
  • Chennai
  • Pune

Costs may be comparatively lower in some smaller cities.

But city alone should not determine where surgery is performed.

For a fertility-preserving procedure, the surgeon’s experience with the relevant surgical technique and the quality of pre-operative planning are important considerations.

Final Thoughts on Fibroid Surgery Cost in India

Fibroid surgery in India in 2026 can cost anywhere from approximately ₹50,000 to ₹2.5 lakh or more, depending on the procedure and circumstances. Robotic and highly complex procedures may cost substantially more.

But the price should not be the first question.

The first question should be:

“Do I need surgery, and if I do, which surgery is appropriate for my health and future plans?”

For women who want children, preserving the uterus may be an important part of treatment planning. Myomectomy removes fibroids while retaining the uterus, whereas hysterectomy removes the uterus and therefore ends the possibility of carrying a pregnancy.

A proper evaluation helps balance three things:

symptom relief + safety + future fertility.

That is a much better way to think about fibroid surgery than looking only at the hospital bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the average fibroid surgery cost in India in 2026?

There is no single fixed price. Depending on the procedure, a broad estimate can range from around ₹50,000 to ₹2.5 lakh or more. Hysteroscopic procedures may cost less, while complex laparoscopic, open or robotic procedures can cost more.

2. Is fibroid surgery necessary for every woman?

No. Some fibroids do not cause symptoms and may only require observation. Surgery is generally considered when symptoms, fibroid location, size, fertility concerns or other clinical factors make treatment necessary.

3. Can fibroids be removed without removing the uterus?

Yes. Myomectomy removes the fibroid while leaving the uterus in place. It is an important option for selected women who wish to preserve fertility.

4. Can I get pregnant after fibroid surgery?

Pregnancy may be possible after myomectomy because the uterus remains in place. However, the timing and pregnancy plan depend on the type and extent of surgery and the woman’s overall fertility condition. Your treating doctor should guide you regarding when it is safe to try.

5. Is a cheaper fibroid surgery always better?

No. The cheapest option is not necessarily the most suitable option. The correct procedure should be selected according to the fibroid’s location, symptoms, reproductive plans and the patient’s overall health. A lower initial price may also exclude hospital, anaesthesia, investigations or other charges.

This article is for educational purposes and should not replace an individual consultation. Fibroid treatment and surgery should be planned after appropriate examination and imaging by a qualified gynaecologist/fertility specialist.
